Why is mineral wool a good insulator?

Mineral wool is a fibrous material that is made from around 98% natural igneous rock or slag, and 2% thermosetting resin binder or an adhesive and a little oil.

The molten mineral or rock is spun or drawn to form fibres, which are bound together with the resin or adhesive. This is what gives 'rock wool' its soft, woolly consistency, and the open fibre structure is what makes it an excellent insulator.

Glass wool insulation (or fibreglass) is made by a similar process, except the main ingredient is glass instead of mineral or rock.

Both glass wool and rock wool are not prone to thermal ageing, meaning the product will retain the same insulation capacity during the entire lifetime of the building.

Additionally, mineral wool insulation does not shrink or expand, so the joints between the material stay closed as much as possible, and thermal bridges are reduced to a minimum.

If soundproofing and fire safety are concerns as well as good insulation, then stone wool is an ideal choice. The insulation effectively forms an acoustic barrier, preventing noise being transferred from one room to another. Being made from rock or mineral, it can withstand high temperatures and is naturally fire resistant.

It's also lightweight and easy to work with, to help save you time on installation. Its applications include the insulation of cavity walls and exterior walls, attic floors and pitched or flat roofs. It’s easy to push the insulation in between batons or rafters. You can mould it with your hands to fit the shape perfectly.

Disadvantages:

Lower heat storage
Irritation

Mineral wool has a lower heat storage capacity than natural insulation materials such as sheep’s wool or wood wool.

The fibrous material can cause irritation on making contact with the skin or being inhaled. Inhaled slivers of mineral wool irritate the alveoli and can cause lung disease.

Protective gear must always be worn when installing the insulation, including working gloves and a dust mask.
